Two girls from the John Little’s Creek community stand by the tracks and wait for the train. In many instances, the L&N passenger train was the primary and most reliable means of communication and transportation into and out of the remote corners of Breathitt County prior to a paved highway system. The L&N operated numerous passenger trains that ran from Jackson to McRoberts and back every day.

Most of the photographs of the heyday of Quicksand and Breathitt County were taken by photographer Claude Duval Back. Duval married Nancy Dixon in 1896 and raised their family on the Henry D. “Snoot” Back farm near the mouth of South Fork. Duval was killed on April 18, 1930, after he wrecked his automobile, making his death one of the first in Breathitt County as the result of a vehicle crash.
